Arctic Circle Shoulder Conference

30th May -  1st June 2012 - Lofoten Islands - Norway

Travel information

There are several ways to travel to Lofoten Islands. Mainly you can come from the south or the north. Both ways are described below. Remember to book early, the capacity of airline travels are limited.

For the conference we have rented a catamarane, MS Alba, to carry the conference committee, faculty and participants who wants to join from Bodø to Svolvær 30th June. The boat leaves Bodø at 1500. The price for this trip is 870 NOK. It will be possible to buy beverages and a light snack meal on board. The trip takes approximately 3 hours. The capacity of the boat is limited. Register early to secure a place.

From the south

Easiest is to travel by plane to Bodø. There are several daily flights between Oslo Airport Gardermoen and Bodø Airport all year round. Flight time is approx. 1.5 hours. Other conncetions also available. You can also travel by train to Bodø. Daily departures all year round.

From Bodø to Lofoten there are several options. There are daily flights all year round operated by DAT (Danish Air Transport) . Flight time is 20-30 minutes. Fly from Bodø to Leknes or Svolvær. Svolvær is of course best, but if the flights are full it is possible to travel to Leknes and then grab a bus to Svolvær (1 hour).

There are daily express passenger boats between Bodø and Skrova/Svolvær all year round.

Northbound Coastal Steamer (Hurtigruten) leaves Bodø every day at 1500 and arrives in Svolvær 2100, all year round.

From the north

Easiest is to travel by plane to Harstad/Narvik Airport Evenes. There are several daily flights between Oslo Airport and Harstad/Narvik Airport Evenes all year round. Flight time is approx. 1.5 hours. You can also get to Narvik by train from Stockholm/Göteborg.

LOFAST is the new ferry-free road link between Lofoten and the mainland . The drive from Harstad/Narvik Airport Evenes to Svolvær now takes about 2.5 hours. Motorists can follow the E10 to Lofoten. There are also daily bus services from Narvik (via Evenes) to Lofoten. Buses leaving Evenes 1040 and 1630 daily.

Our recommendation:

Travel by plane to Bodø on Wednesday 30th in good time to reach MS Alba which is leaving Bodø 1500. On the return trip we recommend plane from Svolvær to Bodø the 1st. Unless you want to use the opportunity to see a greater part of Lofoten once you're here. Please book well ahead, the capacity is limited.

Prolonged stay ?

If you want to stay longer in the Lofoten Islands after the conference this is of course possible. There are a lot of different accomodation possibilities in the Lofoten Islands. Please see follow link to Destination Lofoten.
